Salt River Horse - Andrea Koesters
Mesa, Arizona, September 2021
From the artist: “In Mesa, Arizona lies a legendary river with ancient history. The O’odham peoples' ancestors transformed this area into an agriculturally-rich waterway system in what is now known as the Salt River Valley. Other legendary inhabitants of the river include a band of approximately 300 wild horses. These unique creatures have existed historically in this area for well over a century, but urban sprawl and over-tourism continue to threaten their fragile habitat. The series explores the lesser seen, moon-lit sequence of events that occur near the Salt River at night. Salt River Wild Moon traverses the unique ecosystem of the area and provides a closer look at the secret lives of animals and habitats that operate within the Tonto National Forest in east central Arizona.”
